TAUMATA Ō KUPE

Taumata o Kupe on Te Mahurehure Marae in Point Chevalier, Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), designed by TOA Architects, is a building dedicated to the sharing of mātauranga Māori and to embodying the epic journeys of Māori ancestors across the Pacific and within Aotearoa. Project is funded by Te Mahurehure Marae, Department of Internal Affairs Education and Conference Facility, managed by PMP projects and Stryde Construction. 

The building façade design embodies the dynamism of Kupe’s waka as it sailed towards Aotearoa. The idea of the design as being like a sail with the reflection of the shifting sun and clouds making the building appear to move like a waka across the ocean.

Mahurehure Marae has been serving its community in Pt Chevalier for over 50 years and now its new educational facility and public architecture that allows a multicultural and diverse community to participate in a modern and contemporary space that lives and breathes Te Ao Māori.

201 Hurstmere Road, a 1017 sqm prime land nestled between Takapuna and Milford. The development was to subdivide the 1017 sqm site into 6 freehold lots and construct 6 3-level standalone houses, with a total floor area of 1071 sqm.

The external aesthetics showcase a contemporary and sleek design, achieved through a combination of three cladding materials: Intergra, Nu-Wall and Stria. Recognizing the growing architectural density in Auckland's central district, our project has collaborated with the esteemed design firm ARCHILAND to collectively design five individual residences. These residences will have interior spaces ranging from approximately 160m2 to 170m2, and will feature modern architectural elements, including aluminum exteriors and decorative aluminum accents(Archimax). The design concept emphasizes the incorporation of ample green spaces, enhancing the overall comfort and livability of the development.

Woolworths NZ Fresh Distribution Centre

Equivalent to 4 rugby fields in size, and completed in May 2022, the new $150m Fresh Distribution Centre developed for Woolworths NZ Ltd at Wiri, South Auckland stands out. The temperature-controlled building has various chill zones set at 2, 7 and 13 degrees. Complementing this is a large ripening facility used specifically for avocados and bananas. The building is linked to the neighbouring Hilton Foods warehouse via a high-level automated conveyor bridge delivering meat product directly into the DC for distribution alongside the fruit and vegetables.

The 24/7 facility handles 350,000 crates of fresh produce at any one time. The project has been built to Greenstar 4 and incorporates rainwater harvesting, an extensive solar panel array, low energy and water usage, condensers for cooling and offsets 183 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The project has been awarded the Excellence Award in the Industrial category of the New Zealand Property Council Award 2023.

326 Flat Bush School Road

Situated at the base of Bremner Ridge, this enormous section sits at the edge of a beautiful ecological planting reserve of regional Flat Bush. A building restriction line was put in place to protect the natural state of the ecosystem leaving us with a uniquely shaped
triangular section perched above a very steep slope. Native Puriri, Nikau, Pohutukawa are amongst the many native treescape which have matured over many years in this once rural farmland to form a beautiful, softened threshold between the house and the
planting edge.

From the get-go, the idea was to build a beautiful and contemporary home for a generational family of 6 in the image of a modern treehouse which took advantage of the uniqueness of the site and tree line. Upon entry via an enormous full panel pivot door fitted amongst a sleek wall of dark stained vertical grain cedar, a beautiful floating staircase connecting all 3 floors forms the centrepiece and arrival of the home, softly filtering light vertically throughout the space.

The entire deck extends right up close and in line with the tops of the tree canopies, wrapping around to the side of the house where it eventually merges with a secondary outdoor living area. Glass balustrades continue seamlessly along the entire length of
this decking to further connect the house with nature.
